Antibiotics in medical practice!
Antibiotics represent chemical substances produced by microorganisms which can retard growth, and cause the death of bacteria and other microbes. Antibiotics are one of the most frequently used drugs in medical practice and used in treatment of infectious diseases. Up to now, there are three leading antibiotics on the pharmaceutical market – Amoxicillin, Augmentin, and Doxycycline.
Amoxicillin is a beta-lactamase antibiotic with a bactericidal effect. Amoxicillin is active against aerobic gram-positive bacteria: Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp.; and aerobic gram-negative bacteria: Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Neisseria meningitidis, Escherichia coli, Shigella spp., Salmonella spp., Klebsiella spp. Penicillinase-producing microorganisms are resistant to the action of amoxicillin.
Augmentin is an original formula of a well-known British company GlaxoSmithKline. This drug is a combination of amoxicillin and the most powerful known inhibitor of beta-lactamases clavulanic acid. Clavulanic acid irreversibly blocks the beta-lactamases of both pathogenic and nonpathogenic microorganisms, opening amoxicillin a free way to combat infectious agents. Augmentin has one the broadest spectrum of action die to its unique formula. The drug indicated for infections of the upper and lower respiratory tract (tonsillitis, sinusitis, otitis media, exacerbation of chronic bronchitis and lobar pneumonia), urinary tract infections (cystitis, urethritis, pyelonephritis, gynecological infections), infections of the skin and soft tissues, bones and joints ( osteomyelitis), and even serious infections (septic abortion, obstetric sepsis, abdominal sepsis), as well as for perioperative prophylaxis of surgical infection. Augmentin in tablets is recommended for use in adults, while the syrup is good for children after the 1st month of their life.
Doxycycline is a semisynthetic tetracycline antibiotic with a broad spectrum of action. Doxycycline has a bacteriostatic effect due to inhibition of protein synthesis of pathogens. It is active against aerobic gram-positive bacteria: Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp., Bacillus anthracis, Listeria monocytogenes; anaerobic bacteria: Clostridium spp. Doxycycline is also active against aerobic gram-negative bacteria: Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Escherichia coli, Shigella spp .., Salmonella spp .., Enterobacter spp., Klebsiella spp., Bordetella pertussis, as well as against Rickettsia spp., Treponema spp., Mycoplasma spp . and Chlamydia spp.
All three Amoxicillin, Augmentin, and Doxycycline have common side effects, among which are nausea, vomiting, anorexia, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and constipation. Allergic reactions and candidiasis are also frequent adverse reaction in using these antibiotics. Women using oral birth control pills should be aware that Amoxicillin, Augmentin, and Doxycycline reduce the contraceptive effect of the pills containing estrogen, therefore an alternative protection should be used, e.g. condoms.
